Overcoming Incredible Odds

We are strong. We are amazing. We can overcome. Many of us are excited about what can come out of a new season of political shifts. Many of us are scared to death over the same change. There is little we can do about what the “powers that be” are going to do. We can go to rallies, let our position be known, and help those who may suffer under the new administration. There are always good things and bad things that come about. Some administrations are worse than others, and we can only do what we can do (and pray a whole lot!), but ultimately, we can only hope the people who have been voted into office will do their job with the ultimate goal of improving our nation and its people.

I heard a speech by an African American woman several years ago that touched my heart. Her main point was, “we’ve been here before.” History does tend to repeat itself – you would think we would learn to not make the same mistakes – but we have survived it and come out stronger and usually better.

People everywhere survive incredible odds. Maybe not everyone makes it through unscathed. Maybe not everyone makes it out alive. But, as a whole, most of us will make it through and hopefully will learn from the mistakes, learn from the pain that is caused, learn to be kinder to each other, to look out for each other, to make a better place for us and our descendants to live.

Some storms we have to ride out. And a political wave is one of them. Whether you support the current political control or are fearful of its impact, try to relax and find what joy there is in your immediate sphere. Sometimes that’s all we have to fall back on: family, friends, and the things that give us joy. While we are spending time with our family and friends this 4th of July week, let us celebrate our independence with courageous, hopeful hearts. We have a lot of fixing to do, but we've come a long way and the best way we can continue forward in a positive way is to strive for unity. When we work together as one, we seek the good of all. That's when the opportunity for things to go in a way that benefits us all can happen, because every single person will matter.
