Reaching For the Keys

Do you remember when you were a kid and wishing you could be an adult? The adults had all the control, made all the decisions, seemed to have all the fun… At least we thought so.

Picture yourself sitting in your tree house or digging in mud or riding bikes with your friends and seeing your dad or mom driving out of the driveway and wishing you had that kind of freedom…to be able to drive, to come and go, to get places…

Or maybe you watched your mom or elder sister getting ready for a dance and putting on their makeup; or a dad straightening his tie for a night out, and you wished you could wear makeup and go to adult places, but they won’t let you yet…you are too young…

Now we are adults with adult problems: responsibilities, bills, lawns to mow, meals to cook, struggles to make ends meet…and knowing that most of those trips our parents made in the car were trips that had to be made to function or survive not to play and that driving can be a burden or pain for some of us (and dealing with mass amounts of technology that our parents did not have to deal with!). And we remember the days when we were a child, free to run around the neighborhood, free of responsibilities except our homework and maybe a few chores, free of the worry of being able to cover the bills or keep track of all that stuff, free of having to go to work five or more days a week, sometimes over the expected 40 hours, doing taxes, getting repairs done on houses and cars…free of stress, worry, and anxiety for the most part, because we did not understand the reality of the real world… Now we wish we could be that child again (without the issues kids do have to deal with, of course, because there are issues at every stage of our lives, and we try not to remember that stuff).

Are we ever happy where we are?

Don’t wish for the next phase of your life before it is time for it. It will get here sooner than you can imagine. And one day you will be sitting in a rocking chair, watching the children play across the street, laughing and screaming and being carefree… Watching, because you can’t get out of that rocker anymore for more than what is absolutely necessary.

Let go of the keys to the future and embrace the keys of today.
