If there really are Ents (J.R.R. Tolkien’s tree herders), then are there leprechauns? What about Uranicans (Colleen Ferguson character)? And unicorns? And fairies? (And Santa Claus!) Do we get to believe in all these awesome characters? For real?
I could drop a bomb and say we need a reality check. Really? Believe in all these fictional creatures? We must get grounded and not let our imaginations get us into trouble. But I’d rather say, why not? It puts a little magic in our hearts to believe in fantasy characters. We can know they are not real – even dragons who have some roots in reality – and still enjoy imagining them being real. Who is it hurting? (Unless we are living with severe reality issues. Constant gaming, fear of reality…)
I wrote a blog a while back regarding the potential loss of artists, poets, and the like once AI takes over fully – will we lose the skills to draw a picture, etc. – so I think it’s good for us to believe in nonsense, to allow our imaginations to take hold of the unbelievable, the doubtful, the imaginary. AI can only do what we’ve trained it to do. And if there is a major power outage, Armageddon, or dismantling of computers, will we be able to go back and do the basics again? Will we lose ourselves? Our natural need to create?
So, while reality looms and must be lived, let’s still let the imaginations run wild and believe in those wonderful, made-up characters. Have some fun. It’s good for us.
