You know you’re getting old when… you get down on the floor to find something you dropped and you find yourself saying, “Oh, my Lord, who knew how hard it would be to get off the floor after 60?” Or you sit on the floor with the grandkids and you need help getting up. Or you give up trying to get on the floor, fearful you will NEVER get up. (Or you have to forego a dune buggy ride because you can't get in or out of the dune buggy.)
You know you’re getting old when… you are working in the garden or mowing the lawn and you’re ready to stop an hour in when you used to spend three or four hours at a time in the yard. Easy-peasy. Or you buy a riding mower and your yard is small. Or you can’t climb a ladder anymore…or stairs…or…
You know you’re getting old when… you see posts on social media with pictures of alien items – only they aren’t alien to you as you used them growing up (rotary dial phone, floppy discs, turn tables, phone booths…). Or you see a new tech item that looks like science fiction and there is no way you are going to attempt using it. Like having a phone that allows you to track who is in your house and to talk to them – what!? As one of my older friends said (okay, she’s not that much older), “I’m never going to use that!” Will I ever use it? Hmmmmm…… Maybe. Maybe not.
You know you’re getting old when…you just can’t hear as well as you used to (well, some of us). Instead of hearing “I got a new pill splitter,” (don’t we all have one by age 60?) you hear, “I got a blue spill pitter.” (Not going to think too deeply on that one.) Or “Another one over the fence…” is really, “Another pair of dirty pants…” Over the fence…did he think it was deer, turkeys or (sad but true) a friend passing?
You know you’re getting old when… Well, you get the picture. There are a lot of frustrations in getting old, so we must find some humor and wisdom to make it through. And wisdom is often one of the gifts of aging. Enjoy it and anything else you have left in your aging body. Our mind and souls are being renewed even as our bodies are wasting away. There is no stopping it, so be grateful for the things you can still do and the people you still have, etc. etc., etc. – because there is still much to be grateful for: Every. Single. Breath.
